About an Eye Camp The reality is most of the blind people in India need not suffer. A cataract, for example, is a leading cause of blindness in India and the truth is, this is avoidable. Most people’s sight could be restored with a simple, safe and inexpensive operation. Just as important, for many, just a simple provision of glasses, which they can ill-afford, may give them a new lease of life. In addition, giving vaccinations against Measles or Vitamin A to children can help save loss of eyesight and prolong their life expectancy. An Eye Camp is a means to provide these operations, medication, glasses, educational kits and other treatments in the poorest areas of India. The donations go directly towards the provision and set up of Eye Camps. As donations accumulate, Eye Camps are set up, advertised and eye doctors, nurses and support staff would undertake the treatments in the villages. Those needing operations (for cataracts removal) are taken to eye hospitals in the Mobile Ophthalmic Van and brought back to the villages after treatment. Eye Camps also provide food for those being treated on the Eye Camp day. The services of the Eye Camps (including costs for those requiring a one night stay and meals at the hospital) are of course completely free to everyone receiving eye care and treatments. |
